The SMART Embedded Computing ControlSafe® Platform is comprised of two redundant ControlSafe Computers (CSCs), each of which delivers fail-safe operation, and together provide a highly available platform (up to six 9s). Active/standby CSC roles are managed by a SIL4-certified, electromechanical Safety Relay Box (external) or hardware/firmware Direct Connect Algorithm (internal) logic. The ControlSafe Platform and ControlSafe Computers are optimized for wayside applications with AC power, modular rear I/O for all operational interfaces, and up to six optional communications-based IO modules.

Deployable in both wayside and carborne applications, the ControlSafe platform is designed to support a broad range of I/O modules such as CAN, Ethernet, UART, and future MVB, digital, analog and GPS/Wireless modules to enable solution integrators to handle both new deployments and upgrade projects easily. SMART EC has also cooperated with customers to support user developed specific I/O solutions to meet unique application requirements.

The ControlSafe platform provides rail infrastructure providers and system integrators with a cost-effective way to substantially accelerate time-to-market without incurring the high costs and risks of the SIL4 certification process.

With all reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) processes certified to EN50126, all safety-related software to EN50128, and hardware to EN50129 by TÜV SÜD, one of the most trusted certification bodies worldwide, SMART EC’s ControlSafe Platform can be deployed in SIL4 safety application environments to protect investments in rail infrastructure.


ControlSafe™ IOU-CAN Module

Smart Embedded ControlSafe™ IOU-CAN ModuleThe SMART Embedded Computing IOU-CAN module extends the capability of the ControlSafe™ Computer Platform to interface with up to four High Speed Controller Area Network busses (HSCAN). With rear RTM access I/O it is perfect for wayside applications requiring CAN connectivity to devices or external I/O boxes, for use in applications such as Computer Based Interlocking (CBI), Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), and Positive Train Control (PTC).

This module packetizes and transmits all incoming CAN traffic (using the Ethernet fabric) to the application on the CPU module. Similarly, the CPU module will packetize and transmit any outgoing CAN frames to the cIOU-CAN module for transmission over the CANbus. This module also supports a port mirroring function, which allows both Active and Standby CPUs to access CAN traffic simultaneously.

ControlSafe™ IOU-ETH Module

Smart Embedded IOU ETHThe SMART Embedded Computing IOU-ETH Module for the ControlSafe™ Computer Platform provides 2 x 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports, perfect for extending the capability to connect with external I/O boxes or networks. With rear RTM access I/O it is perfect for wayside applications requiring non-switched, isolated Ethernet ports for connectivity to the secure rail network(s); such as Temporary Speed Reduction Server (TSRS), Train Control Center (TCC), Positive Train Control (PTC), and Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) applications.

All incoming and outgoing Ethernet traffic is transparently forwarded to/from the CPU module. This allows the CPU module in the CSC to be uniquely addressable from multiple external networks using the separate Ethernet interfaces.

ControlSafe™ IOU-UART Module

Smart Embedded IOU UARTThe SMART Embedded Computing IOU-UART Module for the ControlSafe™ Computer provides 6 serial interfaces offering flexible configuration between RS-485, RS-422 and RS-232 support. With rear access I/O, it is perfect for wayside applications such as Traffic Control Center (TCC), Computer Based Interlocking (CBI), and Positive Ttrain Control (PTC).

All incoming and outgoing serial interface traffic is packetized, and transported to/from the CPU module through a TCP socket. Flexible provisioning allows the module to support fixed-frame, delimited, and time-based serial protocols. This module supports SMART EC’s remote management feature, which allows it to be fully provisioned and configured by the application on the CPU module.
